YOU: ASU ANIMATION PROJECT
Using Motion to Visualize Personal Growth.

Background

This project challenged students to create an engaging motion graphic with a duration of 10 seconds or more. My concept was to create a clean and simple animation that encouraged viewers to invest in their own educational journey. Rather than promoting education through traditional messaging, my objective was to communicate the emotional progression of learning using simple visual forms, typography, and motion.

Inspired by Apple’s minimalist advertising and visual language of cinematic motion graphics, I explored how abstract animation could communicate ideas that are often difficult to express through words alone.

Problem Statement

Personal growth is an abstract concept that can feel difficult to visualize. the challenge was to create a short motion graphic that transformed an intangible idea into a compelling visual story capable of inspiring viewers to pursue their own potential.

Process

Rather than beginning with animation techniques, I started by identifying the emotional journey I wanted viewers to experience. I asked myself what learning actually feels like from the first spark of an idea to the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful.

That insight became the foundation of the animation.

Heavily inspired by Apple’s Intention campaign, I intentionally reduced the visual language to its simplest forms. A single circle becomes the central character of the story, continuously transforming into typography and geometric shapes that represent curiosity, creativity, and growth. By limiting the visual vocabulary, every movement carried greater meaning.

Motion itself became a storytelling device. The transition from THINK to CREATE unfolds through a circular wipe resembling the movement of a clock, symbolizing the passage of time between imagination and execution. As the animation progresses, expanding circles, interconnected forms, and evolving geometric structures illustrate how ideas grow, influence others, and become larger than the individual who created them. The final transformation, from YOU into ASU, positions education not as the destination, but as the catalyst that empowers personal growth.

Every animation curve, transition, and timing adjustment was refined to support this narrative. Bézier easing created a sense of momentum and natural movement, while carefully synchronized sound design reinforced each visual transition. Rather than functioning as decoration, motion, typography, audio, and pacing worked together as one cohesive storytelling system.

Results

The final motion graphic transformed a simple educational message into an abstract visual narrative that encouraged reflection, curiosity, and self-investment. Through minimalist design, purposeful animation, and carefully synchronized sound, the project demonstrated how motion graphics can communicate emotion and meaning while engaging viewers in a memorable way.
